He came from Olympiakos as a left-back. He played 88 games for them as left-back. 12 of those games in the Champions League as a left-back. That's why he was thought of as a defender.

The thing is players change, their environment changes and their coaches and managers change. At Olympiakos he may have been told by his coach just to stay back and don't stray forward. At Olympiakos he may well have played with two very good CB's who could cover for any defensive lapses.

He may well have had all this in his locker but was just never able to bring it out until he came to us.

Many players change. Remember, Bale played left-back for Soton and then was bought and played by Spurs as a left-back until he was given freedom and pushed forward. He now basically plays as a wide forward for Real Madrid.

Re: Masuaku
But GPH if he had a brain he'd be near enough the complete package for a wing back......and then he'd be at a bigger club than us

Think he is 22 still so still a bit of a work in progress but the last month or so he has been sensational

Re: Masuaku
Masuaku represents a complete mystery to me.

Not so much the player himself, but why anyone ever thought he was a defender.

He's got the ball skills of an excellent winger, and has good some excellent crosses in him, but as a defender he's an accident waiting to happen. His concentration goes. And, even when he's concentrating, he takes far too many risks too deep in our half.

Re: Masuaku
He's doing really well in the attacking half....defending... not so good... does some great stuff (setting the chance for Ayew) and some absolute turd (letting the ball go under his feet for a throw in)... I imagine he can be pretty frustrating to play in the same side as

I’ve only seen it once, but I haven’t a clue how he got that ball through to Ayew. Quality.

Re: Masuaku
It was superb.

The trickery and footwork to beat two players and then that trick pass perfectly weighted for Ayew.

PLAYER!

I really like Arthur. Been a bit of a revelation in that wing back/left wing role this season.

Re: Masuaku
What a phenomenal bit of skill to set up Ayew. Great pass at the end of it.

Arfur had a good game yesterday, good crosses, good closing down.

Bruuuno he balanced the team by copying Fernandez on the other flank

He had an excellent game at wing back yesterday but worries me when he's playing as an orthodox left back

I think Cresswell's decline about sums up the whole forgetable season.

What do you expect, it's Alex V?

Just because he started the site doesn't prevent him talking bollox most of the time.

Re: Masuaku
What East Auckland said!

As a principle I understand it. Look at the way in which Southampton have been building...ultimately without money we need to 'do a Spurs' and bring players through, trusting them to step up and be good enough. We can't afford to buy our way to success so need to play the longer game.

Spurs have also based their success on selling their best players for exorbitant money and promoting from within wherever possible whilst using big sums to buy multiple lower level younger players but with potential.

Its the only way for a team not drowning in cash to punch above their weight in the current football climate.

Re: Masuaku
I do understand what Alex V is saying, although I completely disagree with it.

Partly because I have absolutely no faith in the following:

1. Either Masuaku or Cresswell staying fit for long enough to be considered our long-term LB

2. Us getting market value or better for whoever we sell

3. An even half-decent replacement being brought in with that money

If we go on recent business, we'll sell a player who should be entering his prime for about 10 million, and buy someone 5 years older for about the same price.

Russ of the BML 10:29 Tue Apr 18
Re: Masuaku
Stupid to suggest to sell Cresswell. Both of them need the competition. For me Arthur has done enough to have the position now. But you don't then sell his direct competition.

Cresswell may not be up for the fight and may, like many footballers do, believe he should be first team. So he may well get the ache and look to leave anyway. If he does then you sell him but until then why upset our strongest position in the squad?
